What are Stats
Stats are specific values that span a range of different areas. Each character will have values for each. Sometimes that value will just be zero.
Stats are used to determine the effects and modifiers of various rolls. The most common stat that you are probably already familiar with are the character Attributes. These are added to various rolls and determine the outcomes of many events.
Stats will change over the course of the game, and reflect your character's current capacities represented in easy-to-understand numbered values. You will track these values on your character sheet.
Below are those stats - the numbers that represent the snapshot of your character at any given time, the numbers you'll track, and the numbers that will determine the success and failure of many rolls to come.
Health Points
Max Health Points (Max HP)
The maximum amount of health your character can have. Informs your current health - after sleeping your character's health will be "full", meaning current and max will be equal. Also informs when your character is considered injured. Max HP increases whenever you level up: during a level up you gain an increase equal to half your Fortitude (rounded down) plus the health-gain amount listed by your class.
Current Health Points (HP)
The current amount of health your character has. Taking damage lowers it; healing increases it. When your current health becomes equal to or less than half your max, you are considered injured. When it reaches 0 you are wounded and will begin to succumb to your wounds until stabilised. Unless otherwise specified, a creature with 0 health is unconscious.
Health can enter negative values. A creature at 0 who takes 10 damage will be at -10 HP. When a creature's HP reaches -Max HP, they die.
Death threshold = -(Max HP)
Movement
The amount of distance your character can travel in one turn after using the move action. Movement influences not only the move action itself but many other features and effects that scale off of it.
Initiative
The amount added to your initiative rolls. Initiative represents your character's readiness for action and the speed at which they can enter the fray.
Initiative rolls determine the initiative order - the character who rolled highest goes first, and those with the lowest go last. Players take their turns in that order. Without any other features, your initiative is equal to your Agility score.
Block & Dodge
Both Block and Dodge are thresholds an enemy's attack roll must meet in order to be successful. When an opponent attacks you, you may choose to Block or Dodge - typically just choosing whichever value is higher. This determination is made after the opponent has rolled their attack.
Block
Represents your ability to have attacks fail against you - not because they missed, but because they struck a well-armored portion of your body, or you successfully absorbed the force and diverted the blow.
Dodge
Represents your ability to have attacks fail by dodging out of the way entirely, or guiding your foe's strike carefully off course.
Attributes
The five attributes represent your character's innate and trained fundamental capacities. They are used to determine the effectiveness of numerous features such as attacks, spells, miracles, resistance checks, and more.
Raw physical power - governs feats of strengths and athletics. Influences weapon damage and to hit, as well as Max Load
Precision and nimbleness - the fine motor control that governs Initiative, as well as your to hit with ranged and many mellee weapons.
Reasoning, knowledge and witt - derives your Mind stat, many important skills and can be the back bone of alchemy or spell casting.
Resolve, conviction, force of will, and spiritual fortitude - derives your Soul stat and like Intellect, it influences skills, alchemy, spell casting and miracles.
Physical endurance and biological resilience - directly affects your Max HP and contributes to Body resistance.
Resistances
The three resistances your character possesses. These are used to overcome effects imposed upon you by other creatures, abilities, or the world. When rolling a resistance check you add the corresponding resistance value to the roll.
Resisting mental intrusions, illusions, and arcane effects that target the psyche.
Derived from: Intellect
Resisting physical afflictions, poisons, disease, and effects that target the flesh.
Derived from: Highest of Agility, Strength, or Fortitude
Resisting spiritual corruption, divine compulsions, and effects that target the spirit.
Derived from: Will
Damage Resistance (DR)
The amount of damage that you or your armor remove from successful attacks. DR represents the toughness of armor or body to shirk off a portion of an attack. DR is applied after all calculations have been made.
Once an enemy has finished calculating how much damage their attack will deal, you subtract an amount equal to your DR from that damage total.
Some effects and damage types ignore DR, in which case it simply will not apply.
Load
Max Load
The amount of weight your character can carry. Max Load is used to determine your Medium Load range, which spans 25% – 75% of your Max Load (rounded down).
Current Load
The amount of weight your character is currently carrying. Compared against Max Load to determine your load level:
Medium Load Range
A pre-calculated reference value showing the highest and lowest current-load values that result in Medium Load status. Calculated in advance for convenience so you can quickly check your load level at a glance.
Medium Load Range = [25% of Max Load] to [75% of Max Load]
Resource
Resource is a generic value that represents a resource that a player uses for their class. A player may choose to put whatever vlaue makes sense for them within this field on their character sheet, but the most common two resources in the game are the two used for casting miracles and spells:
Mana
The resource pool used for casting spells.
Favor
The resource pool used for performing miracles.
Both of these two resources have an associated Max value representing the amount restored when sleeping, which is to be seperated from their current amount.
Threshold (Stat)
The value that creatures need to reach on their resistance checks in order to overcome your miracles, spells, or effects. This is a generic reference stat come, but not all classes may utilise to represent the specific threshold most important to them.
Usage Note
An alchemist character might record their Alchemy Threshold here, while a spellcaster may record their Spell Threshold. It is provided for convenience and quick reference during play.
